Motorcycle Kit Materials Guide
A brief glimpse at some important parts
When you consider everything that is needed to build a motorcycle, it's somewhat amazing just exactly what is, or isn't, included in a motorcycle kit, depending on which one you choose. Here, you'll find a very brief and generic motorcycle kit materials guide, which lists some of the very basics that can be included in a kit.
- Engines
Engines will vary from Panhead, to Shovelhead, to Knucklehead, to Evolution, and will also come in a variety of sizes. Choose from sizes as small as 80 inches, all the way up to 145 inches!
- Tools
Be sure to have the right tools for the kind of bike you're building: it does make a difference!
- Lifts
The easiest kind of lift to use when building your motorcycle is a foot-operated hydraulic pump. No hands needed!
- Carburetors
Make sure that you have the right carburetor for the kind of cable that you'll be using to build your bike. Also be sure to check out the years for which your carburetor system is compatible.
- Drag Pipes
When choosing your drag pipes, always keep in mind that heat shields are optional. As sweet as the pipes look, your safety is just as important.
- Chassis
Don't be shocked at the price of your chassis. Remember to budget enough for this part of the bike, as it's potentially the most important, and very likely the most expensive part.
- Seats
You can choose a seat in a variety of styles, colors and seat materials. Whether it's for style or comfort, you've got a huge selection to choose from.
- Mirrors
To save a few bucks when buying your mirrors, try to buy them in pairs as they're a little less expensive than buying them individually.
- Gas Tanks
Determine the size of your gas tank based on the size of your bike and the length of trips that you'll be taking. Don't buy one that's too big or too small!
- Belt Drives
When selecting the belt drive for your motorcycle, choose carefully. Enough said! You don't want to be stuck with a 3.5-inch belt drive, when you need a 5-inch.
- Covers
Although they may seem like a small piece of the puzzle, your covers can be a big part of what sets your bike apart from the rest. Choose from hundreds of ignition covers, gas tank covers, shock covers& your possibilities are endless.
- Foot Pegs
Make sure that you buy the foot pegs that are the right size for your feet! Comfort is key when choosing these.
- Primaries
Clutch kits can come in a huge variety of price options. Knowing your bike and how you'll ride it is what will make this decision easiest for you.
- Handlebars
Choosing your handlebars can be a lot of fun, and your handlebars can be one of the most fun statements about your bike. Choose from chubbies, classics, low profile or drag bars, to name a few.
- Dash
Available in digital-style or with standard needle dials, your dashboard can be configured in a wide variety of styles.
- Oil Coolers
Just like in your car, this is an incredibly important part of your motorcycle! Don't skimp on this purchase, or on the installation.
- Fenders
Fenders are a way to truly show off your unique style. You can buy pre-cut fenders, or if you know what you're doing, cut them yourself for a truly custom look.
There's more where that came from
To say that this is all that's included with a motorcycle kit would be an overstatement. These are just a few of the key components in building your own bike, however the possible add-ons are endless. If you're serious about building a motorcycle, check with a pro at a trusted bike shop for all of the necessary materials and information that you'll need. Every bike is different, so when you're ready to make your own, choose wisely, build carefully, and have fun!
